A chronograph is a watch that has two uses: telling the time and functioning as a stopwatch.

The term ‘chronograph’ originates from the Greek terms khronographos (time recording) and grapho (to write). The term did originally refer to the process of marking the dial of a watch to indicate how much time had passed. Of course, this is no longer always necessary in modern chronograph watches that have screens and the like.

The time-recording element of the chronograph, however, remains at the heart of its purpose; this type of timepiece not only displays the time but serves as a stopwatch.

So, considering the history of the term and the fact watchmakers continue to make chronographs of all styles and shapes, it’s evidently a timeless watch type – as relevant and desirable now as it’s ever been.

Types of chronograph watch

Chronograph watches come in all shapes, sizes, colours and designs, and can be the perfect accessory to complete any look. Whether you’re heading to an important business meeting or out for cocktails with friends, a chronograph timepiece can keep you punctual while topping off your outfit.

Uses for the chronograph watch

The uses for a chronograph watch are endless. While, of course, they tell the time, they can also be used for their stopwatch function, to time races and sports events – in fact, that is what the chronograph was initially designed to do. Chronographs are also used by the US Navy in the launching of aeroplane catapults, and by NASA. Pick one up from our chronograph range and see for yourself.
