Watches are 'more than just timepieces'

There are two ways a person can see a watch, according to one fashion writer.

Shoba Narayan, writing for the Wall Street Journal's livemint.com resource, explained that most people will look at their wrist and simply see a slightly stylish device which tells the time.

However, she continued: "To others, watches are objects of adoration, a passion, part of a collection. I used to belong to the first category but am veering towards the latter."

Ms Narayan said that it is simply a case of knowing what you like when you walk into a shop or look online for a timepiece, given the wide array of choice available to even casual buyers.

So many things are open to customisation too, she added, highlighting the recent popularity of enamelling and additional decoration to watches, while differentiation with straps can add even more scope for the personal touch of the wearer.

Watches are still one of the few things rich people are willing to invest in, according to the most recent Merrill Lynch World Wealth Report.
