Watches are 'great winter performers'

comScore has underlined just how popular watches and jewellery are in a recent survey which identified the joint category as the best performer during Christmas.

Sales jumped to seal the sector's fate as the top performing online retail category for the 2009 Christmas period, with a 20 per cent rise compared to one year ago, following a tumultuous holiday season in 2008 when sales of watches and jewellery plummeted by 29 per cent.

Other top performers in the Christmas build-up were consumer electronics with 15 per cent sales growth - believed to have been created by transactions involving flat panel TVs and mobile devices.

Event tickets (eight per cent), computer hardware (seven per cent) and books and magazines (six per cent) were also winners over the last few months.

Gian Fulgoni and Dr Magid Abraham founded comScore in 1999 with the idea of creating the first service to measure e-commerce trends.
