Watches are 'fashionable investment'

It is now generally considered uncouth to brag about how much you spend on clothing and fashion accessories such as watches, according to a major style lover.

Nicole Smallwood, the fashion market editor at Marie Claire, explained that a couple of seasons ago it was all about buying the "it" bag and showing off the expense that was attached to it.

However, people are much more likely to buy something simple or discreet now, investing a lot of money into things such as watches which can be worn with any other item of clothing to get the most out of them.

Ms Smallwood continued: "People watch what they spend nowadays and they are wanting items as well that they can use for work that they can maybe take on holiday.

"So if they are buying designer pieces it needs to be versatile now so they can wear it on lots of different occasions."

According to a recent survey from Vogue, 53 per cent of respondents still believe it is important to stay fashionable in the face of the recession.
