Watch this space Hottest 2017 watch trends revealed

First published: 23-01-2017

Smart and fitness watches were embraced by the masses in 2016, but in 2017 the trend for tech-led timepieces won't replace the traditional watch by any stretch of the imagination. Whether you have classic tastes or prefer an ultra-modern look, there's a watch that's perfect for you and will be right on trend for 2017.

Oversized watches: Big and bold

The popularity of oversized watches shows no sign of slowing down, but some of the newest creations are shifting from large faces to chunky casing. The Time Teller from Nixon is a prime example.

This unisex timepiece features a sleek metal bracelet, and a sturdy outer-casing which perfectly frames the faded brown face. Like many pieces from the Nixon collection, it's a watch which looks and feels far more premium than its modest price tag suggests, and is a likely contender for our 2017 bestseller list.

Another oversized offering which has made waves at Watch Shop is the stunning men's chronograph from Lorus below. Green is proving to be a popular colour for watches this season, and this piece utilises this beautifully with its handsome emerald green face.

Framed perfectly with a matt-finish steel casing, the watch channels a classic aesthetic with its Roman numerals and black leather strap. The almost '90s feel of the face, with those stretched serif-font numerals, is right on point for all the throwback styling that really came to the fore in 2016 and is set to continue into 2017.

Smart watches: Stylish tech

As the smart watch begins to mature, demand for more stylish options has increased. Casio has responded with the stunning Edifice collection. The men's Time Traveller watch below utilises Bluetooth technology to pair up with your smartphone, and delivers accurate time wherever you happen to be in the world.

It also happens to feature an irresistibly cool rotating 3D globe dial which looks great in blue set against the jet-black face and silver casing and bracelet.

It's not just the guys who have access to smart-looking smart watches. Demand for black and gold timepieces is on the up this year, and this futuristic Bluetooth-enabled number from Guess balances this style perfectly with tech.

Guess Connect Smart Watch

Compatible with iOS and Android, this nifty smartwatch features call and voice command, as well as the ability to receive notifications and control your phone camera and music. The black face is framed with a sturdy gold case, and finished with a smooth silicone strap.

If you like the black and gold look, but you only want your watch to tell you the time, this ladies watch from Italian brand Furla channels black and gold in a very different style, and to great effect.

Relatively fuss free, and without any smart features, the slim black strap and stark face is broken up well with the chunky gold casing, giving the watch classic elegance with a modern twist.

Nature watches: Down to earth

Those in touch with nature will love the increased trend towards eco-friendly watches. This 100% natural wood timepiece from WeWood is completely free of toxins and chemicals and even comes presented in a recycled gift box.

Featuring a chocolate brown strap and outer casing, it is completed with a faded black face and scratch-proof glass.

Ladies can also get a little closer to nature, albeit with less wood. Since breaking onto the scene a few years back, Olivia Burton has consistently wowed with its stunning collections that pay homage to nature. This beautifully ornate number features a striking golden moulded bee, which looks stunning set against the chocolate brown face.

Military watches: Action man style

The military look is back in vogue and on the catwalks in 2017, but why should adults have all the fun? This fetching camouflage piece from Sekonda's kids range is water-resistant up to 50m and can take a knock or two, with its hard resin casing and rubber strap.

Adults who enjoy army styling are catered for elsewhere, however. Smart Turnout watches does a military-inspired number, with camo strap and matte black face and casing, that's like a more muted and mature version of the Sekonda item above.
