Swiss watches 'becoming increasingly popular'

First published: 11-01-2012

Sales of Swiss watches have bucked the trend in the luxury goods market, with more timepieces than ever before being bought.

While other areas of manufacturing in Switzerland have been experiencing difficult times, the watch sector has been seeing booming sales, with sales of watches such as Omega, Rolex and Patek Philippe all seeing strong increases in their sales, the Financial Times reported.

In total, the number of items sold across these ranges rose by 16 per cent year-on-year to November 2011.

It comes after a strong growth of 22 per cent across the year in 2010.

"This year is expected to be a record and we are also confident about 2012," Jean-Daniel Pasche, president of the Swiss watch industry federation, told the newspaper.

The coming year is set to see the release of a range of interesting timepieces, with Sarah Bench, content writer at Watches.org.uk, predicting that new products from Omega, Timex and Casio all set to appeal to consumers.
