Swiss watch brand introduces new 'seal of approval'

First published: 01-05-2009

A Swiss watch brand has opted to add a seal of approval to its range of watches in 2009, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.

Patek Philippe's announcement to emboss mechanical parts with the new seal comes after figures from the federation show a decline in Swiss watch sales.

The new seal of approval will apply to watch movements as well as cases, dials and hands and could help boost saleability in what is set to be a difficult 2009 market.

Figures from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry show that the industry began to decline in the final months of 2008, following on from a 6.7 per cent increase on 2007 recorded over the month as a whole.

From September, the marked downturn in the global economy had a significant impact on the watch industry performance as a whole.

However, watches costing less than 200 francs (£118) performed slightly better over the year than more expensive watches when compared to figures from 2007.
