Watch maker Seiko has been named as an official sponsor of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The Japanese company has signed a three-year deal to become the timing graphics partner of the AFC's club competitions, including the AFC Cup and the AFC Champions League.

As part of the agreement, Seiko branding will appear on TV graphics during games in the aforementioned competitions - which received record viewing figures in 2013.

Dato Alex Soosay, general secretary of AFC, said: "We are sure the relationship between the AFC and Seiko will be mutually beneficial and we look forward to a long and fruitful relationship."

Yoshinobu Nakamura, president of Seiko, released a statement to say that his company shares the same values as its new partner.

Both, he noted, aim to bring prosperity to local communities and societies.

Mr Nakamura also spoke about the company's 50-year association with sports, stating that it was part of its philosophy.

Seiko was formed in 1881 and produced the world’s first ever quartz watch in 1969.
