Richard Mille watch to adorn Rafa Nadal''s wrist this season

Spanish tennis star and former men''s world number one Rafael Nadal will take to the court this season wearing a Richard Mille mechanical watch valued at $525,000 (£344,400), it has been revealed.

Announcing the partnership this month, the company explained that its RM 027 Tourbillon weighs less than 20 grams even when including the strap, making it one of the lightest watches ever produced using its production techniques.

Rafael Nadal was integral in the design and testing processes of the watch, emphasising the need for lightness, strength and durability in the long-run, as well as the attractiveness and engineering needed for the luxury timepiece market.

Richard Mille said that a few years ago, a titanium watch would not be perceived as a luxurious timepiece as it did not weigh enough.

He added: "However, mentalities rapidly changed and gradually with time amateurs soon appreciated the extreme lightness of my watches whilst being associated with the best technology."

Rafael Nadal will follow in the footsteps of Felipe Massa, who has been working to promote the work of Richard Mille over the last couple of years with his own customised range.
