Putin's taste in watches called into question

Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, has been known in recent months to simply give away his timepieces to lucky recipients hoping to have a reminder of his visit to their area.

In August, for example, a local shepherd's son in the Republic of Tuva was given a pricey Blancpain watch by the president in a moment seen by many as a political stunt, though Putin was perhaps not planning to give away a second to a metalworker in Tula in September after he demanded a memento.

Since then, Pravda.ru has detailed how Mr Putin was seen donning yet another Blancpain when visiting China - the Leman Aqualung Grande Date watch believed to be worth around $10,500 (£6,200).

Despite this, Patek Philippe is also a firm favourite watch company for Putin, it continued, though he isn't the only one.

Lord Mandelson was spotted wearing a Patek Philippe at the Labour Party Conference last month, showing style which many criticised as being outside of the price range for the average Labour-supporting voter.
