Police watch haul could spell future for recent robbers

A smash-and-grab robbery in central London's New Bond Street in July has been traced to a lock-up in a north London business park, resulting in a raft of arrests.

The large haul of luxury items, which include high-end watches and jewellery, followed a tip-off from a member of the general public and comes after a number of robberies around the capital using the same tactic of shock and awe.

Detective inspector at the Metropolitan Police Frank McGowan said the operation carried out by his comrades proved their excellence as officers, highlighting the intelligence-led approach by the well-respected Westminster Crime Squad.

He said of the perpetrators: "These are top-tier criminals engaged in large-scale criminal offences, and this is one of the largest seizures of stolen goods we have made in recent years."

This approach could worry the two unknown robbers of Graff jewellers in Mayfair this month, where £40 million of watches and jewellery was swiped in the biggest raid of its kind in UK history.
