Patek Philippe watch is ''best of 2009''

The Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon, ref 5002 P, has been voted the most collectable watch of 2009 by a leading expert in auctions and return-on-investment luxury purchases.

Paul Fraser Collectables claimed that the timepiece, which went on to become the most expensive modern wrist watch of all time when it took $1.49 million (£983,000) at auction in Hong Kong, is considered the most complicated item ever produced by the "renowned Swiss watchmaker".

It was noted that just two watches of this kind are created each year - one in platinum and another in rose gold - with an Asian private buyer at the Sotheby's auction taking home the timepiece.

For Patek Philippe, it was also the first double-face wristwatch, despite its movement including as many as 686 parts - some of which being "microscopically small".

As for the rest of the list put together by Paul Fraser, offerings from Vacheron Constantin, Hublot, Louis Moinet and Blancpain.

Earlier this week, a Rolex Submariner from the 1950s defied expectations when it came to auction, beating the £5,000 prediction by over £36,000.
