Online fashion sales 'waning' during recession

Fashion sales, such as watches, clothes and jewellery, did not perform as well in May as in the previous month, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

Online sales have been affected by people cutting back on their spending during the recession, claimed head of media campaigns at the BRC Richard Dodd.

However, he noted that sales online still appear to be better than retail sales in other areas.

Despite this, Mr Dodd indicated that he expects things to pick up over the next month or two.

He said: "There will be some benefit if we get good weather, but the evidence from May is clear, that on its own is not enough to provide the kind of revival in sales, or to sustain the kind to growth, that we saw in April.

"The impact of the recession, the effect that's having on people's willingness to spend, is more important than anything."

Figures from the Office of National Statistics indicated that the volume of retail sales in May 2009 was 1.6 per cent less than in the same month in 2008.
