Movie star's watches auctioned in Paris

A veteran movie star has sold off his collection of designer watches, with the auction seeing many of the items attracting bids far above their estimates.

The collection of 100 luxury timepieces belonging to French actor Alain Delon went under the hammer in Paris and sold for a total of $590,300 (£370,000).

This sum was far above the total originally estimated by auction house Cornette de Saint-Cyr, with major brands attracting watch collectors as well as those interested in Hollywood memorabilia.

Delon in still a very popular star in China and it is thought that much of the interest in the items came from the country, with one watch that was worn in several of star's films, including Comme un Bommerang and Parole de Flic, attracting a lot of attention from buyers in the Far East.

It is not the first auction the star has held of his belongings recently, as he has also sold off much of his wine collection.
