Menace of Mayfair watch thief to return to jail

First published: 08-10-2009

Many thought he was a reputable jeweller or a property expert, yet Andrew Batchelor was one of the UK's premier thieves and conmen, it has transpired.

The man, who has been dubbed the Menace of Mayfair, faces another lengthy prison sentence after being caught out again for his disreputable ways, conning people out of watches, jewellery and even property through his charm.

Mr Batchelor was jailed for seven years though it was later reduced to five-and-a-half years on appeal after he was caught for taking £400,000 of valuables at his jewellery shop in Glasgow.

Every time he has been arrested and bailed, he has continued targeting watches and jewellery, using them to fund his well-dressed appearance and improving his appeal to new targets.

Such people have included company directors, hedge fund managers, nurses and headmistresses.

Last month, world-famous Colombian Juan Carlos Guzman-Betancourt, an alleged jewel thief wanted in no less than seven countries, was arrested in the US on suspicion of stealing from wealthy hotel guests.
