Luxury watches 'used for boasting'

First published: 14-11-2011

Luxury watches are a popular way for people to show off how successful they have been, according to one expert.

Marking the recent SalonQP event in London, which saw some of the biggest names in watches showcasing their products, editor of QP magazine James Gurney told the Daily Telegraph that watch companies have escaped the effects of the recession.

He added that the more expensive the brand is, the better it is faring, with many people choosing to use their watches as a symbol of their status.

"Just as you can boast to your mates about how many carburettors your V12 has, so you can boast about your watch. It is certainly more acceptable than talking about, say, your suit," Mr Gurney told the newspaper.

The SalonQP watch fair took place at the Saatchi Gallery between November 11th and 12th, with 40 of the world's most exclusive watch makers displaying their latest designs next to up and coming designers.
