Luxury watches report censored in China

First published: 19-09-2011

A report revealing which watches officials in China wear has been censored to prevent people from finding out which brands of luxury timepieces the country's diplomats own.

Photos of the timepieces sported by the government officials were posted online along with a statement of their brand and price by an internet activist known as Huaguoshanzonshuji.

He spoke to press group AFP and said his research and the images had been removed from a local microblogging site.

The campaigner told the news agency that some of the products he had seen on the wrists of the government members included models from the likes of Rolex and Piaget, with some valued at as much as 70,000 yuan (£6,967).

Consumers in China may well be looking to get more luxury brand watches if they follow similar trends seen in South Korea, where sales of opulent timepieces have been on the increase in recent times.
