Having a fitness watch with Bluetooth capabilities opens you up new fitness possibilities. Depending on which watch you choose, you can connect it to your smartphone to track your progress, share your goals and even receive social media notifications - all an arm's length away.

It's easy to get started. You just need to pair your watch with your smartphone via Bluetooth and you can begin to reap the fitness benefits of connectivity!

Note: The pairing process will vary from model to model, so consult the instruction manual if you get stuck.

Before you start...

Make sure your watch is fully charged, and that your phone has sufficient battery. The two devices must also be nearby – keep them within a few metres of each other.

Your phone may need to have mobile data or Wi-Fi enabled in order to complete the pairing process. And make sure you find out which app corresponds with your watch and download it beforehand.

How to pair your watch with your phone via Bluetooth
  1. On your phone, enable Bluetooth.
  2. Open the app that corresponds with your watch.
  3. Find the 'discover watch' function - if it doesn't pop up during the initial setup, you'll usually find it in the app's settings.
  4. On your watch, make sure Bluetooth is enabled. Consult the manual if you're not sure how - you won't need to do anything for some models. For others, you'll have to hold a button or restart the watch.
  5. Keep an eye on your phone. Once it has found your watch, the model name should appear on the screen.
  6. Tap the name of your watch and select 'pair'.
  7. Now wait. The process can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes.
  8. Matching codes should appear on both your phone and the watch to confirm that the devices have paired.
  9. Optional: When prompted, tap 'enable notifications' to control the way your watch interacts with your phone. You should also be able to control notifications in your phone's settings.
