Consumers still buying luxury items

The luxury goods market is still staying afloat, despite people''s concerns about the wider economy, a fashion expert has said.

Consumers are generally more cautious about what they buy, so are in search of items such as luxury watches that they know will stand the test of time, said Shelly Vella, fashion director at Cosmopolitan.

"Of course if prices aren''t particularly expensive you might pop into the high street and treat yourself to something you wouldn''t normally," she continued.

Ms Vella emphasised that if a piece is likely to stay fashionable year in, year out, then people are more likely to invest in it.

Designers are now opting for classic styles that have an innovative twist in order to get consumers interested, the expert added.

According to the Vogue autumn/winter 2010 trend report, camel is the main colour of the coming season, as top designers such as Chloe, Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton have showcased it in their latest collections.
