Classic watches belonging to film star up for auction

A selection of watches and other items which once belonged to Hollywood actor Douglas Fairbanks Junior are set to be put up for auction by his widow.

The son of silver screen legend Douglas Fairbanks, many of the lots being put up for sale in New York by his third wife Vera Shelton were acquired though his long career in the cinema.

Among the jewellery and watches which are being sold include an 18-carat gold Patek Philippe DFJr monogrammed wristwatch which was valued at between $5,000 and $7,000 (£3,083 and £4,316) and is said by auctioneers Doyle to be one of the star lots.

Other items in the jewellery sale include various monogrammed gold cufflinks, as well as a lighter.

Recently, Sotherby's announced it would be appointing Tim Bourne as the head of its Asian watch auctions, with the position to be based in Hong Kong as demand for classic timepieces rises in the region.
