Casio fans anticipate arrival of watches that hook up to iPhones

Casio is renowned for being a company that prides itself on innovation - consumers have been snapping up its products since the days when calculators appeared in timepieces during the 1990s.

Now, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of a new G-Shock that uses Bluetooth to hook up with the iPhone.

The design will be launched in the UK later this year, but watch lovers got a sneak peek of the colours and design at the big technology trade show in Las Vegas this month.

Shiny black with a silver and black face is sure to be one of the most popular colours, while glossy blue, pearlescent white and luxurious brown are also likely to turn heads.

Each one will be able to link up with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 so that the wearer can receive an alert and a preview whenever they receive a text or email.

A quick glance at the watch face while listening to music will also reveal what song is playing, as well as the accurate time.

Finally, an alarm function will sound if the owner moves too far away from their mobile, something that could make leaving a phone at home a thing of the past.

Casio is working on more versions of the new G-Shock that will make it compatible with other mobile operating systems too, so that Android owners can benefit from the same technology.

It's not the first time in recent years that pioneering new technology has found its way into Casio watches. Back in 2009, the Slim Marine Baby-G was launched and this featured solar atomic technology, which charged its own battery using sunlight.

This could be why Casio watches are perennial favourites with celebrities, having been photographed on the wrists of Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus recently, to name but a few.
