Bought this Pulsar watch as my old Pulsar which ive had for about 25 years was looking a bit battered although it was still keeping good time,i decided to buy a very similar watch to my old one.I am sure my new Pulsar will see me out, im knocking on 60,if not them at the price it cost ill just buy another. Goldsmiths adjusted the bracelet free of charge as promised on the web site. Very happy customer.

My old watch died after a period of unreliability, culminating in me coming out of the bath and my waterproof watch full of steam and stopped, never to go again. Obviously I needed a new watch. It had to be waterproof, attractive and not cost the earth. I decided on a Seiko, having owned three in the past, all performing perfectly. However I was disappointed to find they were now very expensive for what they were, and seemed no better or worse than many others. Then I remembered Pulsar, having owned a solar powered model which served me well for fifteen years. This time I ordered the PJ6023X1 which was good looking, was not encumbered with features I didnt want, I only want day/date and was great value for money. It arrived in double quick time with the strap pre-adjusted to my size. It is lightweight and attractive, with an easy to read dial, slimline case, and a locking system for the strap that is undone by pressing a button on each side rather than tearing your finger nails trying to force the old design open. My only criticism is that although it is supposed to be luminous, and it is, with my failing eyesight, I need to turn the light on if I want to know the time at three in the morning. But hey,It does everything I want it to do at a great price. Who needs a Rolex?

I’m very fussy about the watches I buy, and I do a lot of research by trying on watches in shops and then looking around the internet before I settle on my purchase. After all, a watch is a constant companion, and you have to like and trust it. I had a precise specification in mind, and this Pulsar matched it perfectly. One of my specifications was not price within reason, yet this watch was actually the least expensive of all the ones I tried, while being precisely what I wanted.

Let me explain. Manufacturers might not want you to know this, but quartz movements are all actually very simple and very similar. All you need is a vibrating quartz crystal, a stepping motor, and a simple movement to transfer motion to the hands. Unlike a mechanical watch, the movement is not sprung or under tension, so there is little wear, hence no need for servicing. I still have a 30-year-old Seiko that chugs away to within two seconds a month, needing a battery every five years. It has never been serviced and works perfectly.

So the movement you get in a £50 quartz watch can be identical to one you get in a £500 watch. The difference in price is often what you pay for the name or a more expensive case, if you want gold or titanium. In other words, this Pulsar, despite its low price, can be as accurate and long-lasting as a watch 10 times the price.

Well, why did I choose it? Firstly, I have a small wrist and did not want one of the over-sized models that are fashionable today. This model is not very small, but it is a tad smaller than most. The width of the case, including the crown, is 39.75 mm without the crown it is 37.5 mm. It is 10 mm thick. It is therefore man-sized without being over-sized.

Secondly, I wanted a watch that looks smart enough to wear as a dress watch, while being robust and rugged enough to stand up to everyday wear and tear. As you can see from the photograph, this watch looks smart. Yet it is water-resistant to 100 m. Now, you may not want to swim in it – although you could if you wished – but a water-resistant case is also a dust-resistant case, so it is going to withstand dirt and dust as well as water.

Thirdly, I wanted it be elegantly-shaped while having a sturdy case. This watch has a stainless-steel, screw-in back, and the rest of the case is also made of sturdy stainless steel. It feels solid without being heavy, polished without being delicate, and attractive without being flimsy. In other words, it promises to be a hard-wearing, reliable watch that also looks good – easily good enough to wear on formal occasions.

Finally, I do like the day-date display: it’s clear without being obtrusive. When I’m at work, it’s nice to see ‘FRI’ on the dial. It’s even nicer to wake up and see ‘SAT’ or ‘SUN’ staring up at me!

And talking of looks, the photograph shows that the gold-coloured hands and gold five-minute markers are set off beautifully against the white face, which also has luminous markers, good enough to see at night. The gold features on the dial are picked up in the bracelet, with its attractive parallel gold stripes, and echoed in the gold crown. All that I have said of the case applies to the bracelet, too. It is well-made, comfortable on the wrist, and robust without being weighty.

Do I have any reservations? Only two tiny ones. Firstly, Pulsar say that this model has a three-year battery life, compared to many watches which have a five-year battery life although they rarely last that long. Well, providing you don’t send it back to the manufacturer for new batteries, this won’t cost you much more in maintenance than a watch with a slightly longer battery life. Many high-street shops will fit batteries quite cheaply. Or you can do what I have done and invest in a case-opener tool. A new battery costs about £2 - £5, depending on where you buy it. So … no big deal on the battery life. Secondly, the clasp on the bracelet is of the push-button variety, rather than the more solid fold-over clasp. I’ve not owned one of these before, so cannot comment on their durability, but the clasp feels flimsier than the kind I am used to.

All in all, however, this Pulsar is exactly what I was looking for, and it beats other watches at three or four times the price. It looks great on my wrist and feels as if it will give a lifetime’s reliable service. In fact, I am so pleased with its appearance and specification that I’ve just ordered a second one, this time with the black face, just for variety. After all, I paid a third or a quarter of the price I was expecting, so I can treat myself!

The style --- feature --- appearance of the Pulsar is excellant. Only drawback is the wristband is far TOO big for my wrist which means having to find a shop in my area to do the work needed otherwise no other complaints
