If youre looking for a good Perpetual Calendar watch at an affordable price, look no further!

With the Calibre 8700 Perpetual Calendar models you get the convenience of a watch that you only need to set once and it displays the good day of the week, day of the month and the month until February 2100. Although most of us wont live long enough to manually set Citizens Perpetual Calendar again in 2100, you might wonder whats the problem with that year. Well it turns out that in the Gregorian calendar there are some exceptions to the leap year rule, meaning that 2100, 2200 and 2300 wont actually be leap years although they are multiples of 4. You can google for more information about the Gregorian calendar.
It is very very rare for a mechanical watch to have a true Perpetual calendar that knows 2000, 2004, 2008, etc were leap years, but 2100, 2200 and 2300 wont be and these true Perpetual calendar watches are very expensive.

Besides the convenience of having a calendar thats accurate for 100 years, this watch comes with another great feature: its powered by light natural or artificial.
Just under the dial there is a solar cell that charges a lithium-ion battery which gives you up to 1,5 years of power reserve if the battery is fully charged, no light is getting to the watch dial and all power saving features are active.
The Eco-drive technology is relatively new launched in 1995 so people cant really tell how long the battery will last knowing that each charge cycle decreases little by little the energy storing capacity, or how long the solar cell will last. However, accelerated tests done by Citizen in the lab showed that a 20 year old battery would still hold an estimated 75% of the initial charge, so in theory this watch should run for tens of years, that is if you dont keep it in a drawer.

Regarding the power saving feature, this works in 3 steps cant be disabled:
-if you keep the watch away from any light source for at least 30 minutes like under your sleeve the second hand stops at 12 oclock once light hits the dial, the second hand quickly advances to the current second indication the actual time is always kept, even if some of the hands are not moving
-if the battery charge becomes insufficient battery fully charged and then watch not not getting any light for about half a year the second hand starts moving every 2 seconds to indicate the battery needs charging
-if light still does not reach the solar cell in the above state, after 3 days all hands will stop so the watch can preserve as much energy as possible the watch will continue to keep the time for almost an year in this state before completely stopping

Moving to the design and construction, the first thing Id like to mention is that the case width is 41mm and not 45mm as shown in the description.
This watch looks a lot better live than in the pictures. Its an average size mens watch, not too big, not to thick and definitely not too heavy. In fact I was surprised about how light it is: just 73 grams for this model with a leather strap personally weighed it.

The watch case has a dark gray mirror finish that unfortunately is a fingerprint magnet. The mineral crystal glass is flat and sits just above the case edge I hope it wont scratch easily.
The dial and hands are clearly visible in almost any condition, probably due to the anti-reflective coating thats on the inside of the glass.
If the watch has been kept in a brightly lit area before moving it to a dark room like a bedroom at night, the wide luminous hands and hour markers will be visible throughout the night 6-8 hours.
What I dont really like about the color scheme is the lack of contrast between the hour/minute hands and the outline of the 3 sub-dials. This makes it a bit difficult to do a quick read of the time in some positions, at least while getting used to the watch.

What I love about this watch is the fact that the mechanism is well calibrated and the second hand moves in line with the markers all around the dial.
One interesting thing about the mechanism is that the minute hand does not do one jump from one minute to another and instead has 4 small jumps every 15 seconds.
Accessing the watch functions is pretty easy: when you pull the crown once the second hand moves to 6 oclock to indicate youre in settings mode. Rotating the crown in this position turns the little hand in the lower sub-dial TME, CAL, ALM, L-TM. Pulling out the crown again actually allows you to set the function thats currently selected.

I wont go through all the details about the configurations the step by step instructions are available on the CItizen website where the user manual can also be downloaded. However Ill try to provide some of the details I find most interesting or the ones that are not clearly specified in the user manual.

In L-TM local time mode, the watch can only be set in hour increments the minute hand automatically advances to do a complete rotation back to the accurate minute indication which is great and makes it a lot easier to set the watch.
Another handy feature is that while setting the time in TME time mode, quickly rotating the crown a few times makes the minute hand advance by itself so you just have to wait for it to reach the needed position instead of constantly rotating the crown. When the hands are close to the desired time you just have to rotate the crown once for the minute hand to stop and only advance in 1 minute increments while you turn the crown like fine tuning.

One thing I should mention is that the month reading is not easily available. To actually see the current month indication January, February, etc you have to switch to CAL calendar mode and by doing this the second hand points to the month around the edge of the dial the seconds are not longer indicated.

All in all this is a feature-packed watch with a lot of technology inside. Well designed, great attention to details, modern and it can be worn on almost any occasion. The accuracy is superb so far less than a second slow in 5 days so Im very pleased of my purchase.

Thank you Citizen and thank you watchshop!

This is a very stylish watch with a slightly retro look. At first glance it looks a bit like a chronograph with the 3 dials but it is in fact a perpetual calendar with dials for day, 24hrs and function.

What I like:
- Excellent styling and a very nice dark gunmetal grey finish
- Light weight thanks to the leather strap
- Second time function for travelling
- Sweep second hand
- This watch stands out from the crowd but is not too over the top

What I do not like:
- Nothing but be aware that the size is actually 42mm and not 45mm as stated on the WatchShop website

I would not hesitate to recommend this watch and I dont think there are too many mens watches in the under-£300 category that can match this Citizen.

I had been looking for a new watch for absolutely ages on line. I must be pretty discerning because I only found a couple of watches that fit the bill and they seemed to be out of stock at every retailer that Google could find. And then I found the catchily named Mens Citizen Calibre 8700 Alarm Eco-Drive Watch BL8097-01E.

There were two parts to the brief for my new watch. Firstly, the features. I wanted something water resistant. I am not a diver but I do swim and I do a lot of cycling where I am liable to get wet. I also wanted something solar powered. There is something very settling about the fact that I wont have to change the battery - ever and not only will I save money on batteries, I wont have to deal with people charging me extortionate amounts of money to properly seal it (for water resistance) every time it runs out juice. It also has a stop watch, a perpetual calendar, luminous dials and you can set it to tell the time in two time zones when you are abroad.

All very well but what does it look like? In my view this is the perfect watch for all occasions. It is smart enough for wearing at work or going out but it is also a very cool sports watch. The face is very clear without being overstated and the strap is comfortable.

Looking around, and I did - exhaustively , this is extremely good value. Definitely recommended.

It is stylish and neat, not too chunky for a sports watch, so you could also wear it for a more dressy occasion. The leather strap makes it much lighter. Very competitive price. I liked the idea of solar power and not having to change batteries. A good 30th birthday gift, I hope he likes it!

Excellent watch. My other half has been looking for a watch for years and recently came across the citizen eco drive and now he wont take it off.

I am hoping the battery is going to be as good as a rotary watch that he had for 16 years but only time will tell.

The watch looks great along with excellent build quality. I bought the leather strap for a lighter option. I find it great to have the watch readjusting the dates and months itself - another less things to think about when the month finishes on 30th day. The instruction manual is clear and the watch is really easy to use. A great buy!
