JUNGHANS WATCHES

For more than 150 years, the Junghans brand has stood for quality, reliability and passion. Based in Schramberg, Germany, the long-established, independent company designs and manufactures watches that set new standards and are held in high regard around the world. Having close ties to the company's location and being committed to the values that Junghans embodies, the owners work hard to maintain traditions and to move purposefully forward to a successful future. Tradition and an unswerving spirit of innovation are also reflected in the design and engineering of the company's watches. In this regard the spectrum embraces all current watchmaking technologies: from classic mechanical watches and quartz technology all the way to the company's own radio-controlled and solar technology. With innovative products ‘Made in Germany' and an international outlook, Junghans will continue in future to further develop the unique success story of the watch with the star.

Junghans

Meister Pilot

The high demands placed on timekeeping by aviation were first addressed by Junghans in the 1930s, when the company produced on-board clocks for air traffic use. These were manufactured in level 7 of the now heritage-listed terrace building, the structure offered optimal lighting conditions for the delicate task of watchmaking. The classic instrument appearance of the cockpit was also reflected in the legendary Bundeswehr chronograph of 1955. The design of the Meister Pilot harks back to this: on the bi-directional rotating bezel the 12 distinctive, concave notches ensure a good grip as well as the unmistakable appearance of the timepiece. The screwed case back features a distinctive element: a specially-designed compass rose, which incorporates the symbolism of classic aviation in the form of an artificial horizon. The riveted leather strap ensures a secure fit on the wrist. The particular construction of the front assembly lends the timepiece an unusual elegance for a pilot watch - and the lightness required for take-off.

Meister Driver

The strong emotional link between Junghans and the motor car was first established at the end of the 19th century. Arthur Junghans, son of the company founder Erhard Junghans, was an early automobile enthusiast: in 1892 he bought one of the first Daimler test cars, which was driven to him in Schramberg by Wilhelm Maybach in person. A close friendship existed between the technically-minded Swabians Arthur Junghans, Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler. As a result, Schramberg regularly played host to the technical elite of the era, from Robert Bosch to Ferdinand von Zeppelin. These meetings at the villa of Arthur Junghans served to generate ideas, with these in turn producing numerous significant inventions.

Meister-pieces - Since 1936

Masterpieces come into being when technical achievements take on aesthetic form. This close relationship between technology and aesthetics was recognized by Junghans at a very early stage and led to the company's unique design culture. The Junghans watches of the 1930s to the 1960s created by product designer Anton Ziegler demonstrate this most impressively. Anton Ziegler shaped the appearance of Junghans watches over many decades. The current Meister line is based on the historic design for the Meister watches of this era and makes a clear statement about the classic mechanical horology at Junghans. Its characteristic design simultaneously reflects both the past and the present of the brand. This explains the fascination exerted by the Meister right up to the present day.

Max Bill - The beauty of simplicity

Max Bill was one of the most unusual artists of our time. Acknowledged as a universal genius, he worked as an architect, painter, sculptor and product designer and has left behind an extensive portfolio of creations. This includes one of the most fascinating watch series ever designed - the clocks and wristwatches he created for Junghans - and which remain practically unchanged today. As a Bauhaus student of Walter Gropius, he intuitively understood how to apply the pursuit of constructive clarity and precise proportions to his work. His unrivalled drive to create is also seen in the field of education. He was not only the co-founder and first rector of the Ulm College of Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung - HfG), but the school building is also a Max Bill original design.
