Jewellery designers are looking further afield for inspiration |
Jewellery designers can take their inspiration from anywhere as sculptural pieces get more popular
Contemporary jewellery designers are always striving to push the boundaries of aesthetics with a new twist on old designs.
Modern manufacturing techniques and better access to tools is also helping to drive forward the industry. So much so that jewellery is keeping pace with fashion and catwalk trends are being both matched and inspired by contemporary pieces.
And one of the key looks that appears to be in vogue at the moment are sculptural pieces.
Geometric shapes like those used by artist Eva Rothschild are turning wire craft into a fashion statement and it seems that designers are looking everywhere for inspiration.
"Jewellery designers today can pretty much look at anything for inspiration and they can craft truly unique products, since ... buyers are ready for artistic, sculptural jewels," Designer Pallavi Foley claimed.
Foley has a wealth of experience in the industry - having crowned Miss India with his pieces in both 2006 and 2007 - so when she remarks that 3D ornaments, such as bangles and necklaces are in, it is safe to say that they are.
Ms Foley also believes that fashion houses and jewellers are getting closer in terms of their outlook.
"Design today is all about fashion, attitude and great craftsmanship so keeping this theory in mind, I have used a lot of small detailing and curves to add elegance and glamour to the pieces," she concluded.
Jewellers are also getting more ethically minded as well as they try and win over a type of shopper that wants to know where their jewellery has come from.
Designer Stephen Webster, who tries to use ethically-sourced metals in all his pieces, said that origins of raw materials like silver and gold is vitally important.
"One day I want the gold we sell to be 100 per cent Fairtrade," he noted.
