Jewellery has an important role to play
Jewellery has an important role to play

People want to make sure they are living in a sustainable and ethical way in all areas of their life, including in the jewellery they choose to wear

Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the choices they make in their lives and the impact they may have on people around the world.

It is common for people to look to recycle their household waste rather than putting it in the bin and the numbers who are happy with wearing or using second hand products is on the increase as they look to reduce the demand for products which have to be shipped many hundreds of miles from the factor to their homes.

However, the world of jewellery is a new one that people may start to consider when they are making a decision about picking out ethical products that fit in with the rest of their lifestyle.

While some charities such as Amnesty International have long been producing items of jewellery to support their causes, these products are generally limited to items that have been made from non-precious metals or stones.

All this could be set to change, however, as jewellery company Charles Green has announced it is to be releasing a selection of wedding jewellery that has been created from Fairtrade products.

The Fairminded gold is worked into a line of engagement rings and wedding bands, which can be purchased for both men and women.

Each ring has been crafted as part of the standard line, meaning people do not have to choose from a limited range when selecting their items if they would prefer to have jewellery made from ethically-sourced materials.

"We are delighted to have been licensed to manufacture our jewellery using Fairtrade and Fairmined gold, and we look forward to working with new and existing retail partners to ensure success for all involved," said the company's sales director Oliver Sutton.

People who want to learn how to value jewellery were recently advised by Jean Ghika from Bonhams that looking for hallmarks is an important place to start.
