A leading Microsoft researcher has been showing off his collection of classic Casio watches, explaining why they were digital innovations from their time.

Speaking to Business Week, principal scientist at Microsoft Research Bill Buxton explained that the Casio AT-550 boasts some "pretty amazing software" despite its conservative styling.

To enter digits into the watch's calculator, users need only draw them on the crystal screen with a finger.

Meanwhile, the Casio TC-50 is also touch screen of a sort, but instead calculator mode brings up digital representations of the appropriate icons on the LCD screen.

Finally, he introduced the magazine to the Casio Data Bank 150, which uses actual physical keys.

Mr Buxton also discusses the Tissot Touch watch, which also features touch-sensitive crystal to carry out various functions, including turning the timepiece into a compass.

Earlier this month, Casio further beefed up its G-Shock range, which has been in production since 1983.

The latest additions include the AW-591SC-7AER, G-Rescue and DW-6900CC, which all demonstrate variety available under the famed, tough moniker of G-Shock.
