Casio –A History of Invention

We often talk about innovation and history on our site. Usually this history pertains to watches. Today I want to look at a company with a slightly different history. This company does have a tradition of innovation, and today they manufacturer some of the most advanced watches on the market. They didn’t always make watches, however. Casio Electronics got its start with calculators, and since their first model they have a proven history of invention.

Casio was founded in 1946 by Kashio Todao. The company, originally called Kashio Seisakujo, started manufacturing a ring mounted cigarette holder at about this time. With the success of his first invention, Todao, and his brothers, decided to design an electronic calculator in 1949.

With eight years of design and hard work the brothers finally marketed their first electronic product in 1957. The Casio 14-A was a truly innovative calculator design for its time. It was the first calculator to use a 10 digit keypad, and it was the first to use only one screen to display numbers. More than that, the 14-A was the world’s first all-electric calculator.

This first product took Casio to success in Japan. Throughout the next ten years, further innovations led them to become a global company. In 1964 the company developed Japan’s first desktop calculator. By 1967 they had expanded to US, Canadian, and European markets with the world’s first programmable desktop calculator. Casio’s product development didn’t stop there. In 1972 they released both the first scientific calculator, and the first personal (hand held) model.

In 1974 Casio decided to diversify their product line to maximize profits, and the Casiotron Electronic wrist watch was born. From that date forward, the list of world firsts grows.

• 1976 – Casio Released the first combination clock-calculator
• 1978 – The Casio Mini was the first card-sized calculator
• 1981 – The first electronic dictionary was released
• 1983 – The first shock resistant watch and the first digital diary

This list could go on and on. Since their initial expansion into watches Casio has expanded into many other products areas (and so has their list of inventions). They have become a global leader in electronic innovations.

With over 50 years in Business, it is enough to say that Casio, is one company founded with inventiveness. That foundation has continued right through to today.

At Watch Shop, we stock almost the entire range of Casio watches.
