Citizen – 78 Years of Innovation

When it comes to watches, there are many companies out there that boast impressive histories. Some of those companies can even say they changed the way things were done in the industry. One of those companies is a Japanese watchmaker. Citizen watches can boast more innovations in the past 78 years than any other company out there.

Citizen got its start in 1918, when the Shokosha Watch Research Institute was founded. Their original intent was to create a watch company that was close to the hearts or people everywhere. To fit with that goal, 12 years later (in 1930) the company was renamed, the Citizen Watch Company. Since that time Citizen has become a global company, and with some of their technical innovations they have met their original intent.

In the company’s infancy, they led much technological advancement in Japan. Through the 1940s and 50s the Citizen Watch Company created many firsts in the Japanese market. Some of these include: the first calendar watch, the first wrist watch with alarm “Citizen Alarm”, the first water resistant watch “Parawater”. Those innovations, and the success that came with them, led the company to global expansion. In 1949 the Citizen Trading Co. was established.

The company’s research and development never stopped with their expansion. As a the world’s largest watch manufacturer (a title they have held since 1986), Citizen has designed the worlds slimmest LCD watch, created the first watch with voice recognition, and they were the first to design a dive watch with a depth sensor.

In the past 78 years the times have changed, the people have, but one thing hasn’t. Citizen is still a company close to the hearts of people everywhere. Today you will find the Citizen line up includes technologies like Eco-Drive.

This new technology is the most advanced light power system on the market today. If you’re in the market for a new watch, it may be worth your time to look at a company that has led the advancement of the watch industry. A Citizen Eco-Drive watch is one of the world’s best!
