An 'automatic' watch is a type of watch which is powered by the movement of the wrist. Although these days quartz watches are far more prevalent, many people still buy automatic watches.
The benefit of an automatic watch is that you do not need to change a battery. Also, the internals are all mechanical as opposed to electrical, and this is often displayed by having a see through case either at the front or back or both, so you can visibly see the moving parts. For many people, it is simply enjoyable to wear a traditional automatic watch rather than a modern quartz watch.
The downside is that they cannot store the kinetic energy for long periods of time. Most automatic watches can store charge for 30-40 hours when fully charged, so they need to be worn every day to keep them going, or you will have to reset the time. Generally,
quartz watches are considered more convenient because of this.
Automatic watches are often fitted with jewels, the the number of jewels is often stated. Instead of making some of the internal parts from metal, they are often made from jewels, usually rubies. Rubies have lower friction than metal, so they take longer to wear and result in easier movement of the internal parts.
Of course, automatic and quartz are no longer the only choices. Citizen have revolutionised the watch industry with the invention of
eco-drive (solar powered) - which is considered by many to be the ultimate in convenience.
