An Introduction to Tissot Watches

A History of Tissot

Tissot has been an innovator in the time piece industry since 1853. Tissot Watches now has a presence in 150 countries which stemmed from it's beginning in the little town of Le Locle in Switzerland. Tissot has been responsible for many firsts in the watch industry, from design and materials to technology. This includes innovations such as the creation of watches from pearl, wood, and even rock, as well as their new touch-screen technology T-Touch watch, and even their first pocket watch in 1853 which featured two time zones.

Tissot Watches quickly expanded from it's humble local origin, with the founder's son, Charles-Emile Tissot, selling Tissot savonnette pocket watches all across Russia in 1858. Today, in terms of units sold, they are the leading producer of traditional Swiss watches in the world. Tissot sets themselves apart from other watch designers by supplying diversity in not only design but functionality as well. Their presence has now expanded over five continents with their watches being sold in 16,000 outlets.

Over the years their watches have been owned by a variety of celebrities including Elvis Presley, Nelson Mandela, and Grace Kelly. Some of the ambassadors of the Tissot brand today include Danica Patrick, the first female ever to win an IndyCar race, 2006 World Fencing Champion Margherita Granbassi, and Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP World Champion.

Some of the watches Tissot are well known for are their 'Banana' watches, which were originally produced in 1917 and re-editioned in 2002 as the 'Classic Prince'; the first magnetic watch, which was introduced in 1930, and the IDEA 2001, the first plastic watch which was introduced in 1971. Other innovations included 1985's Rock Watch, which was the first watch made in stone, the Pearl Watch in 1987, which was the first watch made of Mother of Pearl, and 1988's Wood Watch, the first watch made in wood. In more recent times, the T-Touch, produced in 2000, was the first major tactile watch ever made.

Today Tissot is part of the Swatch Group, and has a reputation for offering the highest quality watches at prices that are more affordable than other brands. According to Tissot themselves, they are committed to 'democratic luxury' and providing products that offer 'gold at a silver price'. Their watches provide a sense of style and functionality for both men and women that include choices of trendy, classic, sporty, and technologically enhanced designs.
