An Introduction to Lorus Watches

Lorus Watches

The first Lorus line of watches may have come out in 1982, but they inherit Seiko Watch Corporation's fine reputation for excellence. In 1881 Kintaro Hattori opened the watch shop K Hattori which became the clock shop, "Seikosha" or "House of Fine Workmanship." The first Seiko watches went into production starting in 1924. Seiko was responsible for the first quartz movement chronograph. Under the Lorus brand, they have sold over 120 million Lorus watches worldwide.

Lorus watches blend style, reliability, and affordability. Though lacking in sumptuous diamonds and fine solid gold, Lorus is designed as a good, fashionable watch that does not stress the pocketbook. Lorus excels by providing a large selection of styles from sporty to elegant in a variety of colours and materials. Lorus watch cases come in stainless steel, titanium, PVD gold plated, plastic or resin. Straps can be leather, metal bracelet, plastic or resin. Lorus watches come in digital for easy, quick reading or a more refined analogue. Whatever your wardrobe or social situation, Lorus has a watch to match your mood.

Lorus watches come with a variety of features that make your watch more durable, no matter what you do while wearing it. So many watches today come with snap-together cases. Lorus cases screw in for better shock resistance. Lorus faces are scratch resistant, which helps to minimise scrapes that can cloud the watch crystal. Additionally, Lorus watches are water-resistant to 100 metres. All of this means that your Lorus will be there with you, no matter what you do.

The gentleman's line of Lorus watches exude a masculine strength that is not diminished by the designers' attention to fashion. Lorus men's watches can be comfortable with a jogging suit or under a business suit jacket. Many styles mix materials for a two-tone appearance. Faces have either the traditional round or rectangular dial. Colours are tastefully matched to the rest of the watch, which gives a cohesive appearance.

Lorus has put an equal amount of attention to detail in the ladies' line of watches. Styles are graceful or sporty and fun. Watchband choices are similar to the men's line, but ladies can choose flirty fabric in addition to the leather, metal, or plastic choices. Traditional shapes lend themselves to the sporty or genteel, but Lorus designers have gone the extra mile, providing fun face shapes and colours to complement whimsical moods.

Lorus History

The Lorus brand was launched in 1982 as part of the Seiko Watch Corporation. As such, it benefits from a tradition of tireless research and technological development. Seiko is a great innovator in the watchmaking world, and Lorus is one of its crowning achievements, making timepieces for all tastes and lifestyles.

A good example of Lorus' quality and style is the men's chronograph. This handsome line has robust dials with dual-dial chronographs and small second hands. Some of the selections in this line have tachymeter bezels while others have bezels marked in five-second increments. The faces are dark with white markings and sub-dials for clear visibility, though this is also a great stylistic touch. Cases and bracelets of stainless steel complement the faces with cool, metallic tones.

Lorus also has a standard men's watch with a slightly smaller dial and fewer features. This watch has a handsome, confident look with an elegantly simple composition. There is some variation in this line, with some examples having porthole-style bezels and heavy metal bracelets while others have narrower bezels and straps of stitched leather. Some of the men's selections also have rectangular dials elongated vertically, a captivating retro look that could have been snatched from the 1930s.

Ladies' models are smaller with oval or round dials on narrow metal bracelets or leather straps. Some examples have bright colours, while others rely on the muted tones of brushed or polished metal for an appealing colour scheme. There is an air of casual beauty to all these timepieces, exemplifying femininity as much as the men's models did masculinity.

Lorus has a line of children's watches that have fun designs and colours, but they are not as frivolous as the youth watches of some other designers. The designers seem to understand that what kids really want is not a cute kiddie watch, but one that looks like Mom and Dad's. While the kids' selections are a bit brighter and funkier than those for adults, they are basically the same design. Wearing one of these, a kid can feel that he's got a watch like a grownup, but slightly cooler.

Lorus is a watch company for today. While there are occasional nods to the past, most of their designs have a modern, high-tech look that is smart, stylish and faces firmly toward the future. When that future arrives, Lorus will be there with watches for all of us.
