An Introduction to DKNY Watches

The History of DKNY

Every time you slip a DKNY watch onto your wrist, you should realise that there is a long, compelling history behind how it came to be. DKNY, of course, is the fashionable label that was created by long-time designer Donna Karan. The roots of DKNY lie in the New York City area and span all the way back to Karan's childhood years on Long Island. Karan came by her fashion sensibilities honestly; after all, her father was a tailor and her mum was a model and fashion sales rep. Karan produced her first collection while she was still in high school, setting the stage for a truly incredible journey.

Early Career

Karan attended the Parsons School of Design, a well-regarded NYC-area institution. During her second year there, she was hired by fashion maven Anne Klein. This jump-started Karan's own career, and she impressed Anne with her fashion know-how, creativity and flair. Upon Klein's death in 1974, Karan was named to be her successor. Of course, this cemented Karan's inevitable rise to fashion stardom. In honour of her mentor, Karan debuted the Anne Klein II label in 1982. It wouldn't be long, though, before Karan put her own name forward. Karan paired up with her late husband, Stephen Weiss, to create the Donna Karan label in 1984. The label revolved around high-end women's fashion; accessories, including watching, followed later. In the meantime, though, Karan recognised a gaping hole in accessible urban-inspired fashion; it was brought to her attention by her daughter Gabby. In response, Karan founded DKNY in 1989. The aim of DKNY has always been to provide edgy, wearable and sophisticated clothing for fashion-forward individuals. Needless to say, this goal has always been met throughout the years. In 1996, DKNY and Donna Karan were publicly traded for the first time.

The Smashing Success of DKNY

DKNY was an immediate success for Donna Karan. It quickly spawned a number of specialty lines; DKNY Kids, DKNY Jeans, DKNY Active and DKNY Underwear are just a few of the most notable examples. Of course, accessories quickly became a mainstay of the DKNY line-up. DKNY watches proved to be the perfect addition to the label, and they have always flown off of the shelves. In 1999, DKNY opened its flagship store at Madison Avenue and 60th Street in New York City. A downtown store, on West Broadway, was opened shortly thereafter. If one thing's for sure, it's that DKNY - and its founder, Donna Karan - has never rested on its laurels. In 1992, a menswear line debuted; that same year, its beauty division premiered. Karan brought everything full circle by delving into the world of home fashions in 2001. From candles to bedding, DKNY's home fashions line has proved to be extremely popular. Still, anyone who wants to own an accessory that distils the elegant essence of the DKNY name should invest in a DKNY watch. Like all other Donna Karan and DKNY products, DKNY watches are reliable, gorgeous, edgy and absolutely timeless.
