When I received the kind invitation from WatchShop to review this vintage NY0040-09EE Citizen' s Automatic Promaster Diver's 200m watch, I had ordered and received it by December 29th 2011, I decided to postpone it for a few days. You see in my country, Greece, Santa 'actually comes' during early hours of January 1st, each year. And for orthodox christians (as in Greece , Balkan countries and Russia) His name is not Clauss but Saint Basil the Great, of Caesarea. He was the bishop of Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). He was an influential 4th century Christian theologian. Basil, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Gregory of Nyssa are collectively referred to as the Cappadocian Church Fathers and also as one of the Great Hierarchs. In addition to his work as a theologian, Basil was known for his care of the poor and underprivileged. It is this very care by him for the poors, wounded, ill or elder people and also that Saint Basil died January 1st, that traditionally in Orthodox Christianity, the children ask Saint Basil for presents to bring them during 1st of January each year. Following this tradition I 'wished' the Citizen' s Automatic Diver's 200m watch, to be my present (quite late, as I am well over the children age). And, naturally, there is nowhere better place for my 'watch-wish' than a Watchshop. Indeed, the way this watchshop-'Santa' shows their stock, including a very detailed specifications list together with an excellent analysis of the watch terminology is a novel, which of course contains not only nice but also informative pictures of the watches. The automatic mechanism of the Citizen' s Automatic Diver's watch, together with the 200m underwater rating means that you do not worry for the waterproof tightness of the watch due to a seal ring deterioration after exchanging batteries sometimes. The hands and hour marks are so well distinctive and phosphorescent, and the hands have a suitable length, so people at their 50's can easily see, so they don't have to search for glasses. Of course I could not escape from witnessing immediately the 8 o'clock position of the crown, a real welcome for avoiding my wife's mumbles caused by the fact that many shirt's cuffs have been torn by original position crowns. Not to mention the annoying rub of it on wrists. Fortunately, no more of them will happen due to this changing paradigm watch. The rub instead of bracelet is a welcome for two reasons. The one is that I don't have to visit local watch stores for bracelet adjustment and the second is that the whole watch is lighter with no noise due as withe the knocking metallic bracelet pieces either among them or with other things. Why did I preferred watchshop -Santa than other similar or 'Santas'?. Well It is simple. They clearly state that a) they do not sell used watches, b) they are official stockists directly from the watch manufacturers of the watches they sell with the original packaging and warranty and c) the full for any reason refund policy. Not to mention that when I delayed to place my wish and discovered that stock was cleared, I just ticked the right box and watchshop tried and found additional and informed me, thus becoming a proud owner of this robust promaster diver's watch. Well sort of, as you will see. One thing I missed was that I had forgotten during my order process to choose a usual gift that Santa, err watchshop offers. I should suggest them to include in every pack some kind of gift eg lapelpin, cheap watch or similar for children (and not only). I cannot stop recalling one classical marketing saying: 'Get them young and you 've got them for ever'. Now about the 'review' I was asked for, I have to confess that unfortunately my teenager son was so impressed by this marvel watch that he just decided -a little bit arbitrarily, to wear it himself. So the moral question is what a father can do for his wish? Probably another wish to be placed next year's eve? Or maybe earlier? I used to own the 1998 21 Jewels model of this watch. After years of usage and some long periods of abundance, that old one had never given me any trouble; (except for the glass acting like a mirror underwater sometims, but not deadly). Now, this one has a more modern design, the same build quality , more into-your-face-looks and the clear advantage of the crown being placed on the inner side and not scratching the wrist any more. The only downside may be that the mechanism slightly moves while setting the time. I am really glad to have my old friend back.

As with most things Japanese, the Citizen Automatic divers watch is well made, reliable and low in price. The movement is accurate, as measured against a radio controlled clock. The winding mechanism can just be heard when sitting quietly. Although I have seen this movement used on more expensive brand watches. The sweeping second hand adds to the look but is not as smooth as simular Seiko/Orient watches. The lumibrite markers react brilliantly in the dark and maintain thier brightness, slowly fading over a period of hours. The bezel is easy to read and use. The clock face is clear and easily read. An impressive and unique feature is the crown at the 8 o'clock position. This has made wearing the watch more comfortable as the crown does not rub when bending the wrist, catch when putting on shirts or even ruck sacks. I've found the watch comfortable to wear, although the strap is a little irritating. The Citizen Automatic divers watch is a comfortable, affortable and stylish watch. With an interesting quirk, crown position, showing Ctizens commitment to inovation and forward thinking. I think this watch may also conform with ISO 6425 standard as indicated by the word Diver's written on the watch face.

I like this watch a lot. It looks and feels great. The strap is very comfortable to wear. I thought it would be a bit like a rubber band but not at all it is more comfortable than steel and you dont have to worry about it getting wet like a leather strap. The watch is a lovely design, simple and functional but with a real feel of quality and precision.

I have been searching all the review sites for this watch and it gets some great reviews, so I was not disappointed when it arrived. It looks quite large in the photos but once worn it sits really nicely on the wrist. A nice feature is the inclusion of a sweeping second hand. It feels and looks like a very good quality watch which I'm sure will last me a long time.

I've had my eye on one of these for some time, as their reputation is excellent. I found out that they are no longer part of the Citizen catalogue, and that they have been discontinued, so they're going to become harder to find.

With that in mind I ordered one as a Christmas present to myself. My order was placed on Monday and the watch arrived Tuesday.

It's well built, looks superb, and fits beautifully on the wrist.

All in all, a great watch and excellent service from the Watch Shop.

Great watch, exactly as expected and described on the website.

I think it's meant to be worn on the right wrist because of the crown position, but I wear it on my left because I'm right handed and it looks great.

I love it, well worth the money.

Not sure how accurate the 'automatic' movement is yet because it seemed to gain a couple of minutes in the first week of wearing it, but it may have settled down now. I'm keeping my eye on it.

After the back had been off my casio a few times the screws stripped, and I decided to look for a rugged automatic. I am very pleased with my Citizen Divers watch, I couldn't find many automatics with day, date, and good luminosity, so the choice was pretty narrow. I was worried it might be too big and bulky, and although it's not small, it doesn't feel big because of the shape of the back and the fact that the crown doesn't dig into my wrist because it's on the other side. It gains about 30 seconds a week, which I think is very good for a mechanical movement, and I make a small adjustment every 3 weeks or so. I like the strap, very comfortable and is grooved on the inside to stop the strap keeper things from moving round, very well thought out. Cos I'm a bit skinny I cut a bit off the end of the strap to keep it tidy, and it was really tough to cut, it's virtually unbreakable. If I just had to have a moan about something I would say the rotating bezel is a little loose and ratchety feeling, but it seems strong, and better than some Tag Heure watches I've seen.

This watch will look great on your wrist. It looks expensive and it feels like a quality timepiece. It slips nicely under the cuff of my shirts so it is not a huge watch. It keeps time accurately and the big bonus is that it has a quality automatic movement. The strap takes a bit of getting used to but after wearing mine for two weeks, it feels less irritating now. I haven't been diving yet so can't comment on its water resistance.

All in all a good purchase. If you are looking to buy a divers watch then this is definitely worth considering.

The NY0040-09EE is an automatic diver's 200m watch made of stainless steel with a rubber strap. It comes with glow-in-the-dark hands, a unidirectional ratcheting bezel and a screw-down crown.
The watch body is an interesting shape, with the screw-down caseback protruding about 2mm from the back of the watch, raising the entire assembly off the wrist slightly. I think this gives it a rather cool 'submariney' look, though opinions may vary.
Haven't had the chance to take it diving yet, but having previously used 100m rated Casios to dive without incident, I look forward to excellent performance from this 200m Diver rated watch.
The lume is OK, if you've just been in bright sunlight it will be visibly glowing once you enter the shade, but after a few minutes it dims significantly, but I can safely say from experience that even after 8 hours, it remains bright enough to be clearly visible in the dim, which is all you need really.
I shan't review other aspects of the appearance here, most of it is plain to see from the shop page. I will, however, talk about how the mechanism moves and feels.
The screwdown crown screws in solidly, although when unscrewed it can feel a bit unstable. The handwinding action is in one direction and has a whirring feel to it. Time adjustment feels reasonable. However, the mechanism feels very cheap when adjusting the day and date, for some reason, although it works just fine.
This being my first automatic watch, the sweeping second hand movement is rather a novelty, although I must admit it's not as smooth as I'd hoped. I'd say it actually makes around five smaller movements per second, which isn't quite the gliding motion I expected, but I understand is not unusual for an automatic.
The rubber strap is simple, comfy and does its job. The ND tables printed on the side look kind of cool, but most divers would probably be using a full set of tables or a dive comp, so practical use is rather limited.
Finally, the timekeeping is OK but not amazing, as is usual for an automatic watch. I haven't been timing to the second, but I'd say my watch has gained about a minute and half in the last week. Apparently this can change depending on the position the watch left in when off the wrist, but since I keep mine on all day long there's nothing to be said there, and I'm hoping that over a longer period of time the randomness of my movements will average out and give the watch reasonable accuracy.
In short, this is a decent watch with a retro automatic movement. If you desire more accurate timekeeping I'd suggest going for the similar-looking Eco-Drive Diver for about £20 more, but if you like the idea of a reasonably priced mechanical watch and you're in the market for a diver, this gets my recommendation.

This watch is a good quality, no nonsense watch. It is slightly on the bulky side, but most diving style watches are. The face is nice and simple and it is easy to read the time at night, the illumination is really good. I think the five year guarantee is a great feature, and the watch looks sturdy enough to withstand the test of time. I am not a diver so I cannot review it as a diving watch - I have been swimming with it. The only thing I was not too keen on was the watch strap, which I changed for a much more comfortable (and stylish) silicone one for £7. All in all a lovely watch, if simplicity and quality are what you are looking for.

This is a truly excellent watch.

It's very comfortable on the wrist, looks great and it's an automatic so no worries about batteries.

The price is good, and when you think about the 21 jewels, it's durability, how comfortable and good it looks on your wrist and the fact that for an automatic it keeps excellent time, you are getting a lot of watch for your money.

I would recommend this watch to anyone and not just other divers.

The service at The Watch Shop was excellent. They got it delivered to my door within 24 hours from ordering. Their website was very user friendly and dead easy to navigate around. Overall this is acceptable as an entry-level Diver watch, but be sure that you're satisfied with entry-level. Its specification reflect the price, meaning a) its 200m water resistance is bottom of the scale for a Diver watch (300m or 500m are the ideal WRs), b) it lacks *non-reflective* crystal (very important under water), c) the strap is plastic, not genuine rubber, d) the dial's lume is not as powerful or long lasting as SuperLuminova.

This Citizen Promaster is an automatic 21 jewels self winding watch with a mineral crystal glass. It has an 8 o’clock crown, so not to rub on a diving suit but it means it also will not rub your skin.

It's very well built and it looks great although this is a matter of taste. To me, this is the most beautiful divers watch I know. I like it even better than the Omegas or Rolex Submariners.

Some people complain about the band and I was surprised how comfortable it is after receiving mine. It has a velvet-like feel to it and the side that comes in contact with your skin has a silicone coating that makes it especially comfortable.

The watches movement is a Miyota 8203, which is regarded as highly reliable and accurate for a mechanical watch. The good thing about being mechanical is that you don't have to open it to change batteries and lose a little bit of imperviousness to water each time you do. Some may argue that the new solar powered watches are more practical and I won't argue with that, but this is what a watch has been form many decades. And being a 21 jewels movement, it doesn't get much better than this.

The big competitor for this watch is the Seiko SKXOO7 and several reviews can't agree on which one is better. In my opinion, two facts tip the scale for the Citizen: it costs a lot less and you can wind it by hand and that means you don't have to wear it everyday or let it stop. On the subjective side, I think the Citizen also looks better and wears on the wrist a lot better too, being not so tall as the Seiko.

The luminescence is great, very bright for 4 or 5 hours in the dark.

This watch is no longer on the Citizen catalogue, so I believe these are the last new units for sale. It's very difficult to get hold on a new one, I could only find it on WatchShop. It's a classic watch, higly regarded by collectors, so I think this is also a good investment, I bet it's going to be worth something 10 years from now.

Regarding WatchShopUk, I'm very happy with the service. It was shipped the next day and it came well packed within the original box.

What else can I say... get one while you can, you just can't go wrong with this one!
