The Bulova Accutron II Alpha was first shown at Baselworld in 2014 and follows the 3,000 reissued Spaceview. It pays homage to the Bulova Accutron Spaceview which, back in the 60s, sported a new movement - the tuning fork mechanism. This watch uses a reasonably new mechanism, the Precisionist movement, which other than the realms of the hyper-exclusive and expensive club of the Grand Seiko Spring Drive, is the only quartz regulated mechanism with a near smooth second hand. It boasts 16 vibrations a second, more than any of my mechanical watches all of which manage a paltry 5 vibrations per second. The smoothness of the second hand adds a supremely elegant touch to the bold design of the watch.
The case is beautifully machined - a shield shaped blend of brushed and polished PVD gold and the gold hour markers, mounted on a metallic green outer ring, are raised up to almost touch the gently domed glass. The radial brushing on the metal case is accompanied by radial brushing on the PVD gold faceplate, which is marked with the Bulova tuning fork emblem and the mechanism number BA101.10. The faceplate is broken only by the quartz transistor and there is a deeply recessed gold ring between the faceplate and the hour markers, all of which set against a circuit board green plastic case. The hour markers, the Bulova tuning fork icon at 12 oclock and the hour and minute hands are lumed adequately.
The series name, Bulova Accutron II, is somehow printed inside the glass which allows you to see it without breaking up the beauty of the dial. It really is an absolutely stunning watch.
The tan leather strap is nicely padded and is secured with a quality PVD gold deployment clasp which also improves the aesthetics of the watch when its on the wrist: it is a supremely attractive watch and looks a lot more expensive than it is.
On the negative side, it is fairly light for a watch of its size. This is not a concern in itself but does indicate that the glass is probably not a sapphire crystal which will mean it will need to be looked after a little more than Im used to. To be honest though, it is a lovely watch to wear and Im perfectly happy to treat it with a little TLC.
A real gem.
