Ben Sherman Watches

Ben Sherman Watches is part of the larger Ben Sherman company, a British clothing firm formed in the early 1960s. Today Ben Sherman is a multi-faceted company making numerous items including shirts, shoes and other items as well as watches.

Ben Sherman was formed by Ben Sugarman, an entrepreneur who wanted to produce his own version of the expensive, hard-to-find American shirts that were so popular with the British youth of the time. His timing was perfect, for he was just in time to become one of the leading icons of the "mod" clothing craze of the late '60s. Ben Sherman's shirts and other items helped define the Carnaby Street look that was sweeping England, and the empire took off from there.

Ben Sherman Watches have the cool, sleek style that characterizes all this firm's creations. There is a lot of variety here. Analogue models have standard dial arrangement with centrally-located hour, minute and second hands. Numerals, hour markers and hands are large and easily seen.

Both round and rectangular dials are well-represented in the Ben Sherman collection. The rectangular ones often have slightly bowed lines, giving them a roundness in spite of their non-circular shape. There are a few exceptions with straight lines, but even here, the rounding of the edges of the cases and bracelet links imparts a roundness that prevents the watches from looking angular. The digital models depart from this with sharper lines, displaying a futuristic, sci-fi look.

As with most of their fashion items, Ben Sherman makes watches only for men. Their selections are emphatic, substantial and thoroughly masculine, but with a reserve that speaks of confidence and stops short of being overbearing. The dials are handsome and uncluttered, the hands and numerals large and clear. Some models have small dials for day and date as well as 24-hour time.

While Ben Sherman Watches have only been in production for a relatively short time, there is a wonderfully retro feel to some of these timepieces. Some designs seem to have leaped out of the 1930s or '40s with an elegance and taste from a more relaxed time. The tapered lugs and softly rounded lines speak of a rare ease and flair. Perusing the watches of Ben Sherman, it is evident that they have captured a timeless style incorporating old and new elements to create timeless classics.
