What is Citizen Ecodrive?

When browsing our site, you may notice that nearly all of our Citizen watches feature Eco-drive technology. Ecodrive is a brand term for the technology used to power the watch. Instead of using a standard watch battery they are fitted with a solar panel behind the face (which is invisible) which allows light, be it natural or artificial, to charge the watch. This means that your Citizen watch will continue to function indefinitely, unless of course it is damaged or develops a fault. So you never need to change the battery.

What about if it is left in the dark? It still keeps on going. The light absorbed by the solar panel actually charges up a rechargeable battery inside the watch. This battery then steadily releases the power for months. So, not only do you never have to change the battery, you never have to wind it up or move/shake it either.

Does all this technology make the watch bigger/heavier? No. A Citizen Ecodrive watch is no larger than a standard quartz watch. In fact, Eco-drive technology is featured in Citizen's slimmest watches: The Stiletto range. These Stiletto watches are as thin as only 4mm.

Citizen are so confident in this technology that they now offer 5 year guarantees on ALL of their watches. Citizen watches use only the highest quality japanese movements - it is very rare for one to fail, even within this huge guarantee period.
